MIDI Week 13

9th of December 2020

In week 13 of MIDI we continued are pieces of music for our assignment and also listened to each others songs and gave feedback. I also added a bass into my song.

I also counted how long my project was which was around a minute and a half and I added a new bit onto my song to continue it.

Performance Week 13

8th of December 2020

In week 13 of performance we practiced our 3 songs one after the other so that we know what its going to be like when we have to record it in the gig.

We were able to get all of the harmonies done so we know what harmonies are being done in the 3rd song.

We practiced when in the theatre so that Toby could make sure the levels where correct and made use we all knew what we was doing and are in time.

Recording Week 13

7th of December 2020

In recording week 13 we went straight into the recording studios and put all of the instruments in the same logic project and then edited them together.

The yellow is the electric guitars.

The green is the MIDI keyboard.

The pink is the drums.

The blue is the bass, vocals and acoustic guitar.

The grey is the grand piano that was recorded but had to be re-done in MIDI because it wasn’t in time.

MIDI Week 12

2nd of December 2020

In week 12 of MIDI I continued making my song and also started to pick one of the songs that I made that I want to use for the assignment.

I added some more instruments to my song and used automation to make some of the instruments fade in and out.

Performance Week 12

1st of December 2020

In week 12 of performance we finished the 2nd song and made we made a new melody. We also practiced all the songs that we had done and also found a 3rd song to sing.

We chose idontwannabeyouanymore by Billie Eilish and will be singing that as our 3rd song which Beth will be singing and I will be harmonising over.

We also started making some harmonies for the 3rd song and was figuring out which parts would sound better with harmonies and which wouldn’t. We highlighted on paper what words we would harmonise:

Recording Week 12

30th of November 2020

In week 12 of recording I learnt what microphones to use to make a recording sound professional.

We also went over last weeks recording session and what we spoke about in that session:

To make the piano less boxy and more lively and grand – strip the piano.

Condenser microphones are better used for piano because they can pick up more detail and higher frequencies as well as picking up low frequencies.

To get a warm, bassier sound – put the microphone at the back of the piano.

The main problem with putting the microphone where the pedals are is that it is more noisy and so the microphones can pick that up.

Then we went on to talking about the recording of vocals:

Things you need to record vocals:

-Confidence

-Levels – In and out

-Space (so that no other sounds bleed into the microphone and recording)

You normally use a condenser microphone for softer vocals and a dynamic microphone for louder sounds. If you wanted loud sounds but to also capture the higher frequencies, you can use both microphones. You would put the dynamic mic (such as the SM58 microphone) in front of the singer and then the condenser mic (such as the ROD N1ta microphone) behind the dynamic microphone. The only issue is that you can get phase. You could possible fix this by taking out the low frequencies or the high frequencies.

Pop filter – Reduces blasts of air into the microphone.

The SM58 has a pop filter built into it so you don’t have to put one over it.

We also learnt about Sibilance and how the singer cannot help it so we discussed what you can do to try and fix that.

Sibilance – Because of your teeth.

Can help fix this by putting a rubber band and a pencil to stop the sound hitting the diaphragm directly.

Proximity effect – A phenomenon that leads to an increase in low frequency response as you move the mic closer to the source (the voice). The closer you get, the bigger the bass boast. This can create problems like a more muffled sound but can also open up ways to shape the sound.

We then went to the recording studios and wasn’t able to record anything because the recording studio kept on having problems so we didn’t end up recording anything. We had many problems such as the sound not working, logic not responding, not being able to her the singing and many more.
