Recording Week 11

21st of November 2020

In week 11 of recording we learnt what microphones are used to record piano and where the mics would be best placed,

Microphone at the back of the piano – warmer, deeper sound.

Cardioid or super cardioid microphones are used depending on how many keys are going to be played. If you aren’t play as many keys then you wouldn’t need a super cardioid microphone. Condenser microphones would be used because of how soft the piano is.

Q. How do you record Upright Piano?

You can also place microphones either side of the piano facing the keys to get the whole sound of the piano from the high notes to the lower notes. If you are using the whole piano then a microphone in the middle of the strings would also work because it would capture all the notes. 18 inches away from the hammer and 8 inches above facing towards the hammer would also give you a good sound of the piano.

Then we spoke a bit about what are some songs that the piano is recognised in, this was such as Rocket Man, The scientist and some others. We also talked about a few movies that have recognisable piano pieces such as Jaws, Twilight and Les Misérables.

Then we went into the recording studio and recorded acoustic guitar and bass. Beth and I went into recording studio 2 and recorded acoustic guitar. She played the guitar while I was in control of the sound and recording and that it sounded good.
